Collection of the best text editors (and some IDEs)
Here’s a roundup of our favorite text editors. Some of them are also considered IDEs, which means “integrated development environment”. This means you can do more than just write code. We highly recommend testing them all to see which one works best for your own workflow.
Sublime Text
The Sublime Text editor is definitely one of our favorites! It offers a free version for testing, but all continuing users have to pay $99 to keep it active. While $99 might seem steep for a text editor, it’s important to note that licenses are per user, rather than per machine, so you can enjoy your license on as many computers and operating systems as you want.
In terms of features, Sublime Text has the advantage of being extremely lightweight (low resource usage), while retaining some of the more advanced features you’d expect from a top-tier text editor. The main advantage is that Sublime Text provides shortcuts and search tools to instantly find certain functions and make changes to multiple lines at once. Switching to specific symbols or words only takes a few seconds.
Atom
With Atom, you get access to an open-source text editor for developers. In fact, the creators of Atom state that they made it for developers only. There is also a community of developers who contribute themes and plugins, much like WordPress or other open source tools. An experienced developer should have no problem working with Atom as it offers clean collaboration tools, a streamlined editor, and great organizational tools to keep your projects under control.
Notepad++
Arguably the most popular advanced text editor on the market, Notepad++ comes in a compact package at no cost and with powerful editing components. It is distributed for free under a consumer license, which means that all developers and content creators can enjoy the text editor just after a quick download. Notepad++ runs on Microsoft Windows and aims to use less processing power than the average text editor.
Coffee Cup – The HTML Editor
CoffeeCup’s HTML editor offers extremely advanced text editing for coding and general web design management. The editor has a free trial, but to continue you need to pay the one-time fee of $49. There is also a completely free version, but the features are quite toned down.
